Lavalier vs wireless vs shotgun mic: which microphone do you need?

RØDE VideoMicro II on-camera microphone
In this guide
  1. The three types
  2. Wired lavalier
  3. Wireless clip-on
  4. On-camera shotgun
  5. Our recommendations

Short answer: if you talk to the camera, buy a clip-on mic. A wired lavalier like the BOYA BY-M1 costs under ₹1,200; wireless, like the DJI Mic Mini or RØDE Wireless GO II, lets you move. If you mainly film scenes, B-roll or events, an on-camera shotgun like the RØDE VideoMicro II is simpler.

The three types

Type Sounds best for Strengths Weaknesses From
Wired lavalier Seated talking, classes Cheap, reliable, close to mouth Cable, limited movement ₹800
Wireless clip-on Vlogs, interviews, weddings Close voice + freedom to move Battery, cost ₹3,500
On-camera shotgun B-roll, events, ambience Always on camera, no setup Voice thin beyond ~1 m ₹1,500

Wired lavalier

A small mic on a long cable clips to your collar. Because it’s close to your mouth, voice is clear and room echo is low. It’s ideal for online teaching, sit-down YouTube and podcasts recorded on a camera or phone. The BOYA BY-M1 with its 6 m cable is the classic budget option.

Wireless clip-on

The same close-mic sound, without the cable. Kits have one or two transmitters and a receiver for your camera or phone, and better kits record a backup inside the transmitter. See our wireless mic comparison for which to buy.

On-camera shotgun

A directional mic on the hot shoe picks up what the camera points at and rejects sound from the sides. It’s far better than the built-in mic for B-roll, events and vlogs at arm’s length, and needs zero setup. The RØDE VideoMicro II, VideoMic GO II and budget BOYA BY-MM1 all run on camera power.

Our recommendations

  • Online classes / sit-down YouTube on a budget: wired lavalier.
  • Vlogs, interviews, reels: wireless clip-on.
  • Weddings and events: wireless on the speakers + on-camera shotgun for ambience.
  • Travel B-roll: on-camera shotgun with a furry windshield.

Whatever you choose, monitor with headphones when you can, and use the windshield outdoors.

Frequently asked questions

01Is a shotgun mic better than a lavalier?

Not for talking to camera. A lavalier sits close to your mouth, so it captures clearer voice with less room echo. A shotgun is better for capturing the sound of what's in front of the camera.

02Can I use a lavalier mic with my phone?

Yes. The BOYA BY-M1 includes a TRRS connection for phones with a headphone jack; newer phones need a USB-C or Lightning adapter or a wireless mic with a phone receiver.

03Do on-camera mics need batteries?

Most modern ones (RØDE VideoMicro II, VideoMic GO II, BOYA BY-MM1) run on plug-in power from the camera, so no batteries are needed.
