Short answer: on full-frame, buy an 85mm f/1.8–f/2: the Sony FE 85mm F1.8 or Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro. On APS-C, buy a 56mm f/1.4: the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 or the budget Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.4.

Why focal length matters for faces

Standing close with a wide lens exaggerates noses and foreheads. Stepping back and using a longer lens (85mm full-frame equivalent) keeps proportions natural and makes the background look closer and softer. That’s why 85mm-equivalent lenses are the portrait standard.

Sensor Classic portrait focal length Example
Full-frame 85mm Sony FE 85mm F1.8
APS-C (Sony, Fuji, Nikon) 56mm (≈84mm equiv.) Sigma 56mm f/1.4
APS-C (Canon, 1.6x) 50mm (≈80mm equiv.) RF 50mm f/1.8

Best picks by system

Sony full-frame (a7 IV, a7C II, a7 III): the FE 85mm F1.8 is sharp, light and fast-focusing, and it’s the value choice for weddings.

Canon full-frame (R8, R6 Mark III): the RF 85mm f/2 Macro adds image stabilisation and 0.5x macro, handy for ring and jewellery details at weddings.

APS-C (ZV-E10 II, a6700, X-S20, Z50 II, R50): the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 is the best balance of sharpness, size and autofocus. The Viltrox 56mm f/1.4 costs about ₹12,000 less and is excellent value.

Canon APS-C on a budget: the RF 50mm f/1.8 behaves like an 80mm portrait lens on an R50 or R10, for about ₹18,000.

Nikon Z, light and cheap: the Z 40mm f/2 works as a short portrait lens on the Z50 II and a natural everyday lens on full-frame.

How to get stronger background blur

  1. Use the widest aperture (f/1.4–f/2).
  2. Move your subject away from the background: two to three metres makes a big difference.
  3. Fill the frame: closer framing means blurrier backgrounds.
  4. Choose backgrounds with small lights or leaves for pleasing “bokeh”.

Try them on your camera

Portrait lenses feel very different in the hand. Bring your camera to the Paldi store and we’ll mount a couple so you can compare framing and autofocus. Also see our best lens after the kit lens guide and the wedding camera guide.

Frequently asked questions

01Is 50mm or 85mm better for portraits?

On full-frame, 85mm gives more flattering facial proportions and stronger background blur for head-and-shoulders shots; 50mm is better for half- and full-body portraits in smaller rooms. On APS-C, a 50mm already behaves like a short telephoto portrait lens.

02Do I need f/1.4 or is f/1.8 enough?

f/1.8 is enough for most portraits. f/1.4 helps in very dim light and gives slightly more blur, but focusing precision becomes more critical at wide apertures.

03Which portrait lens is best for pre-wedding shoots?

On full-frame, an 85mm f/1.8 is the standard choice; many photographers add a 70-200mm f/2.8 for compressed outdoor backgrounds.
