A complete home studio lighting setup on a budget

Studio lights on stands

Good light does more for your photos and videos than an expensive camera. The good news: a solid home studio doesn’t cost much.

Continuous light or flash?

  • Continuous LED lights stay on, so what you see is what you get. They’re best for video, YouTube and beginners.
  • Flash (strobes and speedlites) is more powerful and freezes motion. It’s best for portrait and product photography once you’re comfortable.

Most home creators should start with continuous LED.

The two-light starter setup

  1. Key light: your main light, placed about 45° to one side of the subject. A 60W Bowens-mount LED (like the Godox SL60W II) with a softbox gives soft, flattering light.
  2. Fill light: a second, weaker light (or a reflector) on the other side to soften shadows.

A softbox kit with two lights and stands is the quickest way to get both in one box.

Why softboxes matter

A bare light makes hard shadows and shiny skin. A softbox makes the light source bigger, which makes it softer. The bigger and closer the softbox, the softer the light.

Stands and safety

Use proper light stands with their legs fully open, and add a sandbag when lights are raised high. Keep cables taped down.

Budget tips

  • Start with one good key light. You can add a second light later.
  • Daylight-balanced (5600K) LEDs mix best with window light.
  • Bowens mount means you can use a huge range of softboxes and modifiers.
