Short answer: in Gujarat’s climate, the two biggest risks to your gear are heat (batteries, sensors, adhesives) and monsoon humidity (lens fungus). Keep gear out of hot cars, store it dry with silica gel during monsoon, use genuine batteries, and clean lenses the right way.

Summer heat

  • Never leave gear in a parked car. Interiors get far hotter than batteries and electronics are designed for.
  • Shade the camera when it’s on a tripod in the sun. Long 4K recordings in direct sun can trigger overheating warnings.
  • Let batteries cool before charging after heavy use.
  • Use genuine batteries, such as the Canon LP-E17 or Sony NP-FZ100. Copies often lack proper temperature protection and are more likely to swell.

Monsoon humidity and lens fungus

Fungus spores are everywhere; they grow inside lenses when it’s humid, dark and still: exactly a camera bag in a cupboard in August.

  1. Store gear dry: use a dry cabinet or a sealed case like the Pelican 1200 with silica gel. Replace or recharge the gel when it changes colour.
  2. Don’t store gear in a damp bag. After a rainy shoot, unpack, wipe and air everything first.
  3. Use your lenses: light and air movement discourage growth.
  4. Check lenses against a light. Thread-like webs inside mean it’s time for service.

Shooting in rain

Weather-sealed gear tolerates light rain, but sealing isn’t waterproofing. Use a rain cover, keep a microfibre cloth handy, and avoid changing lenses outdoors. Bags with built-in rain covers, like the Lowepro Fastpack BP 250 AW III, help on the way to the shoot.

Condensation: moving from an air-conditioned room into humid air fogs lenses and can put moisture inside. Keep the camera in a closed bag for 15–20 minutes so it warms up gradually.

Cleaning lenses safely

  1. Blow loose dust and grit off with an air blower.
  2. Brush away what’s left with a soft lens brush.
  3. Clean with a drop of lens fluid on a microfibre cloth or tissue, wiping from the centre outward.

A kit like the ZEISS Lens Cleaning Kit has everything. Never use clothing, tissues with lotion, or household glass cleaner.

Sensor dust

Spots in the same place in every photo at f/11–f/16 are sensor dust. Use the camera’s sensor-cleaning mode and a blower (never canned air, which can spray propellant). For stubborn spots, get a professional sensor clean.

Memory cards and data

Heat and humidity also affect cards. Keep them in a case, back up after every shoot, and see our memory card guide.

Frequently asked questions

01How do I prevent fungus in my camera lens?

Keep lenses in a dry box or airtight container with silica gel (replace or recharge it when it changes colour), avoid storing gear in damp bags, and take lenses out into light and dry air regularly. Fungus needs humidity, darkness and stillness.

02Can lens fungus be removed?

Early fungus can often be cleaned by a service centre, but it can etch coatings if left. If you see thread-like patterns inside a lens, get it checked quickly.

03Is it safe to use my camera in the rain?

Weather-sealed bodies and lenses handle light rain, but sealing is not waterproofing. Use a rain cover, wipe the gear dry, and leave it to air out before packing it away.
