Rann Utsav is one of India’s most photogenic festivals: a vast white salt desert, full-moon nights, colourful tent cities and the handicraft villages of Kutch. Here’s what to pack.

The kit

Shooting the white desert

  • Daytime: the white ground fools the meter into underexposing. Add +1 to +2 exposure compensation and check the histogram.
  • Sunset and blue hour: the salt turns pink and blue; use a tripod and low ISO.
  • Full-moon nights: ISO 400–1600, f/2.8–f/4, a few seconds’ exposure; bracket shots.

Villages and handicrafts

Hodka, Bhujodi and other craft villages are best with a fast prime and a respectful approach. Ask before photographing people, and buy from the artisans you photograph.

Drones and restricted areas

The Great Rann is near the international border, and much of it is restricted airspace and sensitive area. Check rules locally and on Digital Sky; assume drones aren’t permitted unless confirmed. See our drone guide.

Protecting your gear

Fine salt dust is abrasive and corrosive. Avoid changing lenses in the wind, blow dust off before wiping, and wipe the camera body each evening. Read camera care in heat and monsoon.

Frequently asked questions

01Can I fly a drone at Rann Utsav?

The Rann of Kutch is close to the international border, and much of the area is restricted airspace. Check Digital Sky and local permissions before considering a flight; assume it's not allowed unless confirmed.

02What lens is best for the white desert?

A wide lens (16-24mm equivalent) captures the scale of the salt flats, and a telephoto compresses distant camel carts and people against the horizon.

03How do I photograph the white Rann on a full-moon night?

Use a tripod, ISO 400–1600, f/2.8–f/4 and exposures of a few seconds. Bracket exposures, since the white ground and moon are much brighter than the sky.
