Mirrorless vs DSLR in 2026: should you still buy a DSLR?

It’s one of the questions we hear most at the counter. Here’s the short answer, then the details.

Short answer: for most people buying new today, mirrorless is the better choice. A DSLR still makes sense if you already own good DSLR lenses, or you find a great deal and mainly shoot stills.

Autofocus

Modern mirrorless cameras recognise and track eyes, faces, animals and vehicles across the whole frame. DSLRs focus well through the viewfinder, but subject tracking is far more advanced on mirrorless.

Video

Mirrorless cameras are much better for video. They focus smoothly during recording, offer better 4K, and let you see the exposure in the viewfinder. If you shoot reels or YouTube, choose mirrorless.

Size and weight

Without the mirror box, mirrorless bodies are smaller and lighter. That makes a real difference on long wedding days and trips.

Viewfinder

DSLRs show an optical view. Mirrorless cameras use an electronic viewfinder that shows exactly what the photo will look like, including exposure and white balance.

Battery life

DSLRs usually get more shots per charge. With mirrorless, carry a spare battery.

Lenses and the future

Camera brands now launch new lenses mainly for mirrorless mounts (Canon RF, Nikon Z, Sony E, Fujifilm X). Adapters let many DSLR lenses work on mirrorless bodies, so switching doesn’t mean starting over.

Our advice

  • New buyer: mirrorless.
  • Own several DSLR lenses: consider a mirrorless body with an adapter, or keep your DSLR if it does the job.
  • Mostly video: mirrorless, no question.
