Canon vs Sony for YouTube: which camera should you buy?

By Shree Sagar Sales · 2 October 2026

Creator filming with a camera

The two cameras creators ask us about most are the Canon EOS R50 and the Sony ZV-E10 II. Both are excellent for YouTube. The right one depends on how you film.

Video quality

  • Sony ZV-E10 II: 4K up to 60p with 10-bit colour. This gives you more room to colour-grade and smoother slow motion.
  • Canon EOS R50: uncropped 4K 30p with Canon’s pleasing colour straight out of the camera. That’s ideal if you don’t want to edit colour much.

Verdict: if you edit and grade, Sony. If you want great-looking footage with minimal editing, Canon.

Autofocus for talking-head videos

Both lock onto faces and eyes reliably. Sony’s “product showcase” mode, which switches focus to an object you hold up, is handy for review channels. Canon’s eye detection is equally dependable for vlogging.

Battery life

The ZV-E10 II uses Sony’s large NP-FZ100 battery and comfortably outlasts the R50. If you film long sessions, budget for a spare battery with either camera, or use a USB-C power source.

Lenses

  • Sony E-mount has the biggest choice of third-party lenses (Sigma, Tamron and others), which keeps upgrades affordable.
  • Canon RF has excellent native lenses, such as the RF 50mm f/1.8.

The kit matters more than the camera

Viewers forgive slightly soft video. They don’t forgive bad sound or harsh light. A complete creator kit usually looks like this:

  1. Camera (either of the above)
  2. Wireless mic, such as the RØDE Wireless GO II, for clean audio anywhere
  3. Key light, such as the Godox SL60W II with a softbox
  4. Tripod and a fast V30 memory card
